However, getting back to the Burlington County scholarship winners, Commissioner Felicia Hopson, a liaison to the Women’s Advisory Council, said that as women leaders, they have a responsibility to serve as mentors and role models for the next generation and she was immensely pleased of the job that the Council undertook to inspire and assist the young achievers. Commissioner Allison Eckel, who is also a liaison to the Advisory Council, noted that Burlington County has been blessed with many excellent women leaders, from Alice Paul and Elizabeth White to Charity Still and Carli Lloyd; and now the three scholarship winners are already accomplishing amazing things. She added that she was happy to contribute to their continued education because she believed they’ll continue the tradition of excellent women in the form Myla Walker, Anna Nguyen, and Maya Martin each received a $1,000 grant earlier this summer to aid with the costs of their upcoming autumn semesters of study.

Myla Walker :

The Alice Paul Champion scholarship, which is given to a student who has shown leadership and activism for problems related to women’s equality, was chosen as the recipient for Myla Walker.

Myla graduated from Burlington Township High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and an honours student. She also held the positions of vice president of the student government and of the school’s Black Student Union. She was a peer leadership club member and an athletic trainer.

Myla was involved with the Girl Scouts of Southern and Central New Jersey outside of school and worked as a champion for the Girls State summer leadership programme. She also spent the summer as an intern at the law firm. She also served as a summer intern at Amy Vasquez’s legal practice. At Spelman College, she is currently studying Comparative Women’s Studies.

Anna Nguyen

The Elizabeth Coleman White scholarship is given to a student who has shown leadership potential, academic excellence, and a desire to pursue a career in the STEM fields. Anna Nguyen was chosen as the recipient of this year’s scholarship.

Anna, a resident of Evesham, recently earned her high school diploma from Cherokee and was inducted into the National Honor Society as well as the honour societies for Art, Technology, and World Languages. She also participated in the school’s PB&J Club, Asian Culture Club, Advisory Board for the Class of 2022, and Yearbook Club.

She spent her time volunteering outside of school at Moorestown’s Majoda Stables’ Therapeutic Riding programme and Moorestown Sports Camp. Additionally, she took part in Teentech, a programme that encourages STEM education and job prospects.

At Carnegie Mellon University, Anna is pursuing a degree in computer engineering.

Maya Martin

The Celeste Arties scholarship, given to a graduating student who has shown proficiency in academics and leadership and has an interest in women’s issues, was granted to Maya Martin.

Rancocas Valley Regional High School graduate Maya lives in Hainesport. She was a National Honor Society member and a four-year honours student. She was also a member of the school’s swim team, co-founder and vice president of UNICEF, editor of the school newspaper, event chair for Students Against Hunger, and co-founder and student coordinator of the RV Give Back Organization Food Pantry.

Additionally, Maya served as the gender studies chair of the high school Social Justice Club and assisted in planning a symposium and roundtable on women’s empowerment.
