Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has urged Chelsea’s next manager to include a special clause in their contract to prevent Todd Boehly from interfering with the team. The call comes after Boehly labelled Chelsea’s current situation as ’embarrassing’ and singled out a senior player for criticism inside Chelsea’s dressing room after their 2-1 defeat to Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
While Chelsea’s former manager Frank Lampard has no issue with Boehly speaking to the players, Wenger believes that the club’s ownership should be kept at a distance from the team. Wenger said that he always put such a clause in his own contract and advised young coaches to do the same. This clause would make it clear that the coach is solely responsible for managing the team and that nobody can buy a player without the coach’s agreement or interfere with the team.

Wenger also expressed concern over Chelsea’s large transfer outlay and the speed at which it has been committed. He said that he prefers a slower investment, such as £100m over five years, rather than £500m in one go, as it allows the team to be changed more effectively. If the investment is not made wisely, he said, then there is a real problem for the future.
Chelsea is still struggling with the same weaknesses as before, Wenger said. They do not score enough goals, despite having a lot of possession, and have not been able to convert their chances into goals. This was seen in their recent game against Real Madrid when they took off Joao Felix, whom they had signed in December because he had not been scoring enough goals.
Wenger’s comments come as Chelsea searches for a new manager, with Julian Nagelsmann reportedly in the running. It remains to be seen whether the club will take Wenger’s advice and include a clause in the next manager’s contract to prevent Boehly from interfering with the team.
