With many colleges offering a combination of in-person and online study, the future only appears to be brighter than it has been in the past few years, but the need for the correct equipment is just as great.

Here is a guide to some of the technology that will help students make the most of their educational experience while on a limited budget, from laptops and phones to headphones and note-taking tools.

Smartphones:  The good news is that top-notch smartphones are easily accessible for less than £500.

The greatest low-cost phone of the year is the freshly announced Google Pixel 6a, which retails for £360 with a student discount. With terrific performance, a fantastic camera, and top-notch software, including the fantastic auto-transcription Google Recorder app, it outperforms many phones costing twice as much.

If you are already an Apple user, the iPhone SE 2022, which costs roughly £419, is an equally fantastic deal. In contrast to most others, it boasts top performance and will last up to seven years with software updates despite its archaic appearance.

Headphones: Without a strong set of headphones to block out the noise, it might be difficult to focus in a noisy library, café, or student residence.

For listening while travelling, wireless earbuds are excellent. Noise-cancelling, high-quality audio, long battery life, and an interesting transparent design are all features of Nothing’s Ear 1. They are also comfortable to wear. They cost roughly £89 and operate with PCs as well as Android or iPhone devices.

Apple’s AirPods 3 are excellent as well, although they only drown out noise rather than blocking it out. They cost about £180 and are great for calls, but look out for fakes.

Large over-ear noise-cancelling headphones are the best option if the concentration is your top priority. The older Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones are still superb at reducing noise and sound fantastic, making them my top choice. They simultaneously connect to your phone and laptop, fold up conveniently for travel, and are fairly durable. You can frequently find these for well under £250 if you shop around.

Note-Taking Apps: It might be challenging to keep your digital lectures, notes, and ideas organised and readily available while travelling, but happily there are several tools available to support you.  Evernote is a cross-platform tool that I’ve always admired for its apps for almost any device and its ability to sync notes, photographs, audio recordings, and just about anything else in the cloud. With 60MB of monthly uploads, which is sufficient for text notes and the occasional photo, it is free for up to two devices, such as your phone and laptop. Evernote Personal costs £5.99 per month, or students can subscribe for a full year and save 40–50%.

OneNote from Microsoft is a great substitute with comparable features and apps for the majority of devices. Notes are stored in OneDrive, which is free with a Microsoft account and has 5GB of space, despite the fact that using it is free. More OneDrive storage costs £1.99 a month for 100GB of space or can be purchased with a Microsoft 365 membership for £59.99, which also comes with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook apps in addition to 1TB of storage.

Even though Apple’s Notes is excellent for taking handwritten notes on an iPad, it is not cross-platform, cannot handle as many file attachments, and has less sophisticated features. It may be used for free on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and in web browsers, but it consumes your allotted 5GB of free iCloud storage.

Tablets and laptops :

Since laptops are used for the majority of work, choosing the correct one makes life for students just a little bit simpler.

Key trade-offs include screen size and portability. The easier it is to work on a larger screen, but the heavier it is to carry between classes. I suggest a 13- to the 14-inch screen as a good compromise, however, a smaller computer could be ideal if you plan to regularly plug into a display. Make sure the display has a minimum resolution of 1080p.

Look for Intel i5 or i7 processors from the 11th or the most recent 12th generation, at least 8GB of RAM, and 128GB or more of SSD storage.

Tablets :

If you have the budget for it, a tablet can also be a very helpful addition to your computer arsenal, providing both educational and entertaining value.

For instance, Apple’s entry-level iPad, which retails for £319, or less with a student discount, has a decent 10.2 screen that can be used for note-taking with an Apple Pencil (£85) or as a portable second screen for a Mac when you need a second monitor while you’re on the go. If you want to use it as a mini substitute for a laptop, there are several educational and productivity programmes for it as well as a keyboard case. It also works well as a portable TV thanks to all the various movie and music streaming options.

Amazon’s cost-effective Fire tablets, which start at £60, provide entertainment possibilities but aren’t very productive. The more useful Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 ($219 list price) misses the iPad’s abundance of work and educational apps but is more helpful.
